The Kingdom of God
When John the Baptist preached he always insisted on repentance for the Kingdom of God is at hand. After the death of John the Baptist
Christ also taught about the same
Kingdom. In Matthew 25:31-43, Christ gives the things we need to do for us to inherit the Kingdom. In today's gospel passage Christ gives two parables. One parable of the seed from the moment it's planted
to the final moment of harvesting. In the second parable Christ teaches us through the mustard seed. The seed that grow and is harvested is by God's work. The mustard seed becoming huge for the birds to find a place to rest is also wonders and miracles of God.
In the first parable we learn the work of God. We gain this kingdom not by our efforts but by the grace of God. We are saved by faith, good works and the grace of God. These are ingredients to see us reach the harvesting moment.
In the duration that the seed is on the ground till it's harvest, God works on the resulting plant. He prunes, waters, digs
around it all by his power. This is God's doing. What then sustains this seed?
In the second parable we have the parable of the mustard seed. In this parable there is the seed that's planted. The smallest of the seeds. This seed is the first thing God brings. I as an individual. He brings me to this world not for my own sake but for the sake of others too. This is the reason the seed grows to be a huge plant with the largest branches. These large branches represent the community. We need the community for us to keep getting closer to God. We need this community since with their help we
journey.
All these seeds grow in faith. We need faith to sustain our relationship with God. We need faith even if it the size of the mustard seed. Faith takes us closer to God. We need therefore to learn that the kingdom of God is attains by the power of God, by accepting that we are a community and helping others grow too and all this is crowned by faith in God.
Saint Thomas Aquinas, pray for us
